Tim winton breath book5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Coulter and Spence were both amateur actors selected for their surfing ability, captured stunningly by water cinematographer Rick Rifici. It follows Pikelet (Samson Coulter) and Loonie (Ben Spence) over a formative few years as they get taken in under the wing of the ageing surf legend Sando (Baker), and grow enraptured with Sando’s troubled wife, Eva (Elizabeth Debicki). Set in 1970s Western Australia and shot in the coastal town of Denmark, Baker’s flick hews closely to Winton’s text. That’s where being the director is a bit more interesting, because you can flush out the nuance and the detail.” “Often it doesn’t matter how much you bring to it it’s just going to become what it is. Diplomatically, he doesn’t point fingers. ![]() “A lot of the roles that I’ve played, where they’re – on paper – only two dimensional they’re not that rich, it’s because they’re generally devices,” he explains. ![]() ![]() Sillitoe said this was akin to being advised by a clairvoyant on the true nature of his existence, and refused any changes. Other publishers had insisted Sillitoe rewrite sections to better reflect the reality of working-class life. ![]() Interestingly, five mainstream publishers refused the book before WH Allen published it in 1958. Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (SNSM) is set in Nottingham and draws on Sillitoe’s own experience of working-class life and culture. He left school at 14 to work in factories until he joined the RAF in 1945. Book review by Alice C: Saturday Night and Sunday Morning was: ‘That rarest of all finds: a genuine, no-punches-pulled unromanticised working-class novel which makes Room at the Top look like a vicar’s tea party’, according to a review in the Daily Telegraph.īorn in a council house in Nottingham in 1928, his father illiterate and frequently unemployed, Alan Sillitoe’s upbringing was marked by poverty and domestic violence. ![]() Trick by Natalia Jaster5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() This is no ordinary romantic fantasy, as it heavily deals with the topic of ableism. The first book, Trick, follows princess Briar of the Autumn court as she falls in love with a mischievous court jester named Poet. The Foolish Kingdoms series by Natalia Jaster is one of the most underrated romances within fantasy genre. But, because its heavy subject matter, Long Shot marks an important addition to the romance genre. This book deals heavily with sexual/physical abuse and can be hard to read sometimes. Long Shot follows Iris and August who meet at the wrong place in the wrong time. Her books cover important (well-researched) topics, and feature beautiful realistic characters. Kennedy Ryan is one of those romance authors that just gets it. This romance is funny, heart-warming, and covers important topics! Perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and R.S Grey! Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan The two have a meet-cute at the hospital but after numerous failed attempts to ask Dorothy out, Elijah is at loss what to do. ![]() ![]() This follows recently divorced Doctor Elijah and nurse Dorothy, who is on the autistic spectrum. Here’s a list of some underrated romances to enjoy over the holidays! ![]() On Whale Island by Daniel Hays5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() I certainly agree with checking out and doing what's good for you because the reality is "running around after little pieces of green paper" is a waste of time. Just for these new sounds in my life I want to stay here forever." I have stood in our harbor and heard water being dragged through seaweed, a jellyfish turned over, a ripple being reflected off a rock. I could never listen this completely before. ![]() The radio tells me there is a Canada - well, a Nova Scotia anyway - but overall, with the fog outside and inside our windows, the world is quite small and entertainment is scarce." It has been gray and stormy all week and it's only faith that lets me know there is a sun, a moon, and a mainland nearby. ![]() I know a lot about the minutia of their lives, rather like following someone you vaguely know in Facebook. Maybe if the author didn't seem to simply want to escape his life and had some other compelling motivation, this would have been more engaging. Halfway through I was already uninterested, but still finished in case something dramatic happened. And then there was the time this happened. I believe Daniel Hays believes himself to be a modern-day Thoreau, particularly since he quotes him at the beginning of almost every chapter, but while he includes supposed journal entries, they are more chronological than thoughtful. I'm discovering that people moving to an uninhabited island is not so interesting. ![]() I had high hopes for this, because of my cold weather island obsession. ![]() P djeli clark ring shout5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Griffith released Birth of A Nation which led to the second resurgence of the KKK and the popularization of a fake history that still haunts us. It’s complicated and confusing don’t worry about it.” (I imagined the vanē as elven type people please no one correct me because Taraeth is my new Legolas.) And THEN ON TOP OF THAT we have reincarnation and rebirth!!!!!Īre you confused!!! I was confused!! At one point the footnote writer said, “Look. ![]() And ancient civilisations merging into newer ones. And then there were complex family trees. (“Yes I am your relative, just soul-swapped so now I’m not technically related but still!!”) And they all lied about their identities. It had an insanely complex family tree - made 500 x more complex by the fact nobody could stop swapping their fREAKING SOULS AND BODIES. ![]() It had a lot of trappings of a good ol’ epic fantasy: an empire built on the backs of slaves, dragons, assassin guilds, demons and wizards. It had weak patches (in my opinion) but overall it just captivated me. And this just came at a point where I was obsessed. I go through phases of being obsessed and then turned off epic fantasy. But the audio is A+ and I’m completely satisfied with my reading choice there.) The thing I love most about this book is it completely enchanted me. (Although partially this was my fault as I was listening to an audiobook and didn’t have a lot of time to listen vs I would’ve been faster reading it with my own eyeballs. I take a moment to self-five myself just because I’ve been reading for 3 months okay. I FINALLY FINISHED READING THE RUIN OF KINGS. ![]() Book before the coffee gets cold5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() The characters in this novel bring life and heart to this story, each with a distinct voice and personality. ![]() Before the Coffee Gets Cold is a heartfelt novel written with compassion and hope, reconciling the past to pave a road to happiness and second chances.
